Just about anybody who possessed an indoor kitty is aware what a mission it is, to regularly clean a litter box. And so many owners of indoor cats have experienced what an even bigger task it is if the kitty doesn't take the litter box! Well, there are those among us who dream of higher things and do not want to settle for litter box cleaning. For these kitty owners, we have good news now. Indeed, believe it or not, kitties can be trained, to use an actual toilet. When you are toilet training your kitty, you will teach it in the process to to do business on the toilet instead of using the litter box. In case this sounds too good to be true, don't be disappointed when you recognise that you still have to flush the toilet for your cat.
1. Relocating Your Cat's Litter Box
Just in case that your cat's litter box is not yet in the bathroom, you will have to move it there. The cat litter box should be close to the toilet on the ground for some time. Every few days you will put your litter box up a few inches using something very stable to sit under it. In case you have no furniture fitting this description, you can use books if they are arranged in a stable manner. Of course, to arrive at the point where the edge of the cat litter box and the toilet bowl are on the same level. Then you want to install a sturdy aluminum pan over the toilet bowl in a manner that will support your cat without wobbling as you begin the toilet training. Limit the amount of cat litter at this time to less than an inch across the surface of the pan.
2. How to make your Cat feel Comfortable using its new Toilet Seat
After you have taken away the litter box and have the kitty using the pan only, you are now ready to start the last part of toilet training of your cat. You will begin the training by poking some holes in the bottom of one side of your aluminum pan. Of course, you should cut back on the cat litter so that it doesn't leave through the toilet. In addition to that, you should consider using flushable kitty litter at this time. The holes are supposed to force your cat to put its front paws on the toilet seat when it needs to potty. Once your kitty has been doing this for several days, you should put holes on the opposite side of the pan and that the kitty will stand completely on the toilet seat. The not so easy step of the toilet training is that you have to take away the pan after your kitty has been doing this successfully for some time. If you trained your kitty successfully, your cat will from now on use the bathroom toilet!
A Final Info on Cat Toilet Training
These two lessons take maybe as long as two to three months with a narrow minded, senior cat. So be patient with your feline companion. Always remember water isn't exactly what cats are usually comfortable around. Don't stop if your cat doesn't use the toilet a couple of times in a row. Just keep your pan in case your feline friend is not willing or is momentarily not in the mood using this toilet. You can simply put the pan back on the toilet seat and the cat can be re-trained to use the toilet again pretty quickly. The advantages of toilet training your feline companion are many.
